Myself: I started this project this last year with a friend who also played Rock the Shores, Lo Waight. We wanted to make a project that would be an opportunity to shine light on women in the music scene, here in Victoria, We wanted to focus on the women in this way because you tend to be a bit outnumbered, and i think it's an excellent way to band together and support each other as well. You are part of Chersea’s band, and I am so excited she asked to have you be a part of this project as well!
The first question I am going to ask is, i'm sure you have had a lot of musical influences, who are some of your favourite ones that have influenced YOU, male OR female?
Kristy-Lee: The biggest one off the gate was probably Billie Joe Armstrong. Green Day was the first band I was ever obsessed with. Around grade 6 I finally realized that the musicians on the radio weren’t just people in a warehouse playing music (i thought that’s how it was when I was that young LOL) There is actually bands out there! But, it was Green Day and No Doubt that I loved back then. With Gwen Stefani, I loved that she was the front of a rock band but I still couldn’t really identify with it as much as I could with Billy Joe Armstrong. Then I became obsessed with Queen later on as well.
Myself: Is that kind of how you feel now as well in regards to influences?
Kristy-Lee: Queens of the Stone Age became a big influence as well. But yeah it’s mostly rock music, and there isn’t really a ton of women IN rock music. I have started my own rock band, and we all happen to be women in this band. It’s amazing to see bands like The Beaches opening for Death from Above, Foo Fighters, winning Junos - They're really kicking ass and its badass that they’re all women. I struggled to find role models that were women that I personally could relate with on an entire level. Joan Jett would be the closest, but all those #1 hits, she didn’t write those songs. She did a lot, but where is the real shredders, the real rock.
Myself: So you play guitar?
Kristy-Lee: Actually my main instrument is trumpet, i have a degree in trumpet! Haha. When Chersea first put up this add for people to play in her band she was just looking for someone to play synth, possibly guitar, and sing. I had seen her play and I thought to myself that I loved what this girl was doing, and I saw she had trumpet with her set too - so I said I am in! But yeah my first is trumpet, then guitar, and I learned more about synth a couple years ago when I was playing with this band called Bend Sinister.
Myself: The last question (kind of generic) but, what is your favourite part about performing?
Kristy Lee: There is a lot I love about it. I feel like there is this pressure for modesty and not to show off, not to make a scene. But up on stage I am supposed to do that, so up on stage when I can have no inhibitions and I can be my purest self. Its that place where there is freedom, where I can show off, or deal with the guilt. It’s such a pure place where you can communicate on this crazy wave length!
